I was doing a bit of Alopecia research today and found the bbc website to be quite helpful. I was particularly impressed by the “Home Truths” section which contained a couple of stories about people living with alopecia.
What I found really touching was the story of a young 11 year old lad called kris in Aberdeen. His story echoed my experiences as a child with Alopecia and having to deal with bullying as a result of standing out from the crowd. Admitedly, schools are getting much better at dealing with bullying in general but it still happens as we all know and a lot Kris’ ability to cope is down to his fiesty personality and positive attitude. He’s a real inspiration!
Kris and his parents, Wendy and Ian, explain how the condition runs in Ian’s family and how in Kris’ case it manifested itself unusually early. It’s an audio item and well worth listening to especially if your a child with Alopecia.
Listen to Kris’ alopecia story here and his you may also find his website interesting too.

As my alopecia has progressed I’ve started to lose hair all over my body and if I’m honest I’m not really that bothered. In fact its brought some unexpected advantages!
I’ve been steadily losing hair around the beard area (this condition is more commonly known as alopecia barbie) and I now have patches of hair loss between 2-3 centimeters in diameter over my face. Now any guy that shaves regularly will know what a hassle it is shaving every day, sure its a novelty when your a teenager and you have finally made it out of bum fluff territory and have some real man stubble but after a while its a complete drag. Especially when your like me and you have particularly thick dark whiskers so you have what looks like a 5 o’clock shadow throughout the day.
These days shaving is a breeze, my whiskers aren’t so thick, a lot of my face is as smooth as you like and shaving takes less and less time. So personally I’m looking forward to losing the lot. No more shaving. Hurrah!

Following on from my post about celebrity role models and alopecia. Its great to see people suffering from alopecia reaching the top of their game, and in this case literally! Charlie villanueva has reached incredible heights on both the american college circuit and now the NBA! He currently plays for the Toronto Raptors having recently moved the Connecticut Huskies and it seems like there’s no stopping him.
Villanueva had has to deal with Alopecia at a very early age and was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata and at the age of 13 so he knows all about the social and pyschological impact the disease can have on you as a teenager.
He is now the National Alopecia Areata Foundation spokesperson through his Charlies Angels and is a great role model for kids with alopecia especially. Seeing how Charlie has excelled in his field gives us all fantastic inspiration!

So do Procerin and Provillus work? Well there has been a lot of talk recently about natural hair loss treatments such as these and whether they work and the feedback from men using these supplements has been positive.
To be honest both are pretty similar and share some of the same ingredients such as vitamin B6, Gotu Kola, Magnesium, Zinc Sulfate and Muria Puama. They essentially work by blocking something called dihydrotestosterone or DHT as it is more commonly known. DHT is the most common cause of hair loss in men and it occurs in the scalp and is the by product of the male hormone testosterone.
Both these treatments are most effective in men within the age range of 18 - 35 as their hair is still in the growth phase. This is because as men get older, their hair’s natural growth cycle cannot keep up with the hair loss. Procerin and Provillus are most effective for those men whose hair is still growing.
Both Procerin and Provillus are reportedly safe to take in conjunction with other supplements and medications for treatment of hair loss. Many users report great success using Procerin and Propecia together for instance as they both target different phases of DHT production. In terms of side effective some men have reported mild stomach discomfort but other then that there are no known problems and both are 100% natural supplements.
It seems experimentation is key here and if you are likely to respond to these treatments then I expect you’ll get results with either. Results are not likely to happen overnight so give it several months before you think about trying anything else.
Most importantly before you try any hair loss treatment consult your dermatologist or doctor.
