Alopecia Documentary

I finally managed to watch the Alopecia documentary “Gail Porter Laid Bare” last night ( I had to tape it as I was on holiday in Cornwall) and was really impressed and actually surprised at how intimate it was and it certainly looked like Gail had given the documentary team complete access to her life.

I was particularily impressed by the support of her boyfriend and very moved by the moment she was told by the dermatologist that that she only had a 10 % chance of any recovery and as someone who has Alopecia Universalis it hit me hard as well despite having come to terms with the condition. I think her reaction is one we can all sympathise with.

In stark contrast I was actually annoyed at the so called expert laser therapist who claimed that they could cure hair loss easily and especially someone who has Alopecia Totalis/Universalis. What a joke! So it came as no surpise when Gail was stood in front of the dermatologist saying it hadn’t worked.

Another highlight was Gail’s meeting with Michelle and I have to confess to having a bit of a giggle over her trying out the wigs. She looked like she was having a great time and in my opinion the brunette look really suited Gail.

I would have perhaps liked to see some more discussion (perhaps with a psychologist) about how to cope with the emotional aspects of the condition as this is an area that really interests me but on the whole this was a great documentary. On a parting note all I’d say is I’d like to see some more coverage in the near future whether from the BBC or another channel and perhaps next time we could see a range of people living with the condition to get a range of views about Alopecia.
